  Prologue

  Larry Jones, the business manager at Carnal Connections, a BDSM community, was working late back in his office when he heard two gunshots reverberating inside the building.

  “The rogue panthers!” He raced out of his office and up the stairs because that was where the noise had seemed to come from.

  As he rounded the bend in the staircase he saw the cougar twins, Verity and Serena, their arms around each other’s shoulder and waist, run at a door and jump, kicking it with all four feet.

  Leticia’s room.

  “Get out of the way,” he roared and hit the door with his shoulder right by the lock. The door smashed inward and he skidded to a stop, the cougars right behind him. Sam, holding a gun, was bent over his daughter Leticia, who was curled into a ball on the floor of her closet with blood all over her jeans.

  “Get Tor and Omar,” he ordered the girls. Tor, a nurse, would be able to care for Leticia, and Omar, the Alpha of the panther pack, would sort out the mess.

  Lucy, his personal assistant, spoke calmly from behind him. “Shall I call 9-1-1?”

  “Wait until Tor’s looked at her. Her breathing’s fine, and as a male, and a wolf, I don’t dare touch her myself.”

  However, he did dare touch Sam. He pulled the man away from Leticia, snatched the gun out of his hand, and threw it into the hallway. “What the fuck did you think you were doing?”

  Larry saw Lucy kneel beside Leticia but kept his hand firmly on Sam’s arm. The man had seemed unhinged for a while, but he’d never expected anything like this to happen.

  Suddenly the tiny room was crowded with people. Tor kneeled beside Lucy to care for Leticia, Oliver, one of the panthers, handed Larry some rope to restrain Sam, and Jill, an older human woman, brought Tor the first-aid box from the barn.

  The room seemed even smaller when Omar pushed his way through the crowd. “Sam, Larry asked you a question and I’d like to hear the answer, too. Just what the fuck did you think you were doing shooting your own daughter? Why did you even have a gun in her bedroom?”

  The room was instantly silent. Sam looked at the floor and said nothing.

  “Leticia’s been shot in her leg. I don’t think the bullet hit the bone, but she needs to go to hospital,” said Tor.

  “I’m calling 9-1-1 now,” said Lucy.

  “Get the police as well. Sam’s going to jail,” said Larry firmly, staring Omar in the eyes.

  “I agree,” said Omar.

  “Oliver, go and watch for the paramedics so you can show them where to come. Jill, stay with the cougar girls, they’ll be in shock. Everyone else other than Lucy, Omar, and Tor, go back to your homes,” said Larry.

  He knew they’d congregate somewhere to watch, but as long as they weren’t in the way he didn’t really care where they were or what they did. He now had the world’s biggest fuckup to sort out. Sam.

  Chapter One

  Jubilee was human whereas Leticia was a panther. However, since Ramona was mated to Omar, the panther Alpha, and Gaynor was mated to Tor, a nurse, she knew these women would have news of Leticia. Jubilee had thought for a while the poor little panther was having a hard time, since her father kept her locked away from everyone so much because of his fear she’d be attacked by the rogue panthers. It’d been several days since Sam had shot Leticia. There had to be news by now. She really hoped the pa
nther hadn’t been seriously injured. A gunshot could be very bad news.

  “Hi, Ramona. Hi, Gaynor.”

  “Hi there, Jubilee. How’re you doing today?”

  “Fine thanks, Gaynor. I came over to find out how Leticia and Sam are getting on.”

  “Leticia’s fine. The bullet went into the fleshy part of her thigh and didn’t hit anything important. So just a hole straight in and straight out again. Tor says she can come home tomorrow. He made sure William is the one nursing her at the hospital when he’s not available himself, but Oliver is staying there with her anyway.”

  “I’ve thought for a while that Oliver likes her and wants her for himself, but he’s never said anything like that,” said Ramona.

  “Yeah, well, with the way Sam acts around her I’m not surprised,” replied Jubilee.

  “Sam’s totally lost the plot. But I’m not sure jail is the right place for him to stay much longer. I think he needs medical help or counseling or something.” Jubilee looked at Gaynor and nodded. That was the kind of thing she’d been thinking, too. It just wasn’t normal for a man to shoot a daughter as quiet and obedient at Leticia.

  “Since he was our pack Alpha until he retired and Omar replaced him, I’d better take the Fifth on that.” Ramona folded her arms and Jubilee knew she agreed with them even though she was too smart to say so in public.

  Jubilee smiled. “That’s okay. We all know the man has been adrift from reality lately. But what’s going to happen to him? When will he get out of jail? Will he get the help he needs? And whyever did he shoot her in the first place? There was no danger at all.”

  “That’s the problem. There’s no way Leticia will ever say anything against him, and he can’t see he’s acting like she’s two, not twenty-two, the way he confines and limits her. He won’t listen to his own pack when they try to speak to him. He always used to respect Frank and Frank’s advice, but not when anyone says anything about Leticia. He’s stone-deaf then. It’s a challenge for the entire community. Unless Carnal Connections decides to kick him out. He’s never formally applied for membership, so he hasn’t been accepted other than as a guest seeking refuge from the rogue panthers,” said Ramona.

  “It’s more complicated than that. Anyone could say the shot was an accident. Maybe it really was an accident after all. Sam will never leave Leticia.” Gaynor was frowning. Jubilee wondered what Tor had said to her in private about Sam. As a nurse, likely he wasn’t too impressed with someone who shot his family for no reason. And Tor was a wolf, not a panther like Sam.

  “And Leticia won’t ever say anything against her father, so here we are back at the beginning of the circle again. He’ll say it was an accident. She won’t contradict him, and he’ll be out of jail and back here to keep her locked up again.” Ramona sighed.

  Jubilee thought life was terribly unfair to Leticia but couldn’t see a solution. At least she hadn’t been hurt too badly. But maybe she’d been shocked enough that she would stand up against Sam next time he tried to bully her.

  Jubilee stared at Ramona’s collar. It was so very pretty. It was made of three narrow strands of white leather braided together, meeting at a gold, heart-shaped lock. Quite a few of the submissives here at Carnal Connections had collars. Some were just a plain chain with a padlock that they could wear anywhere without anyone outside the lifestyle knowing what they meant. On the other hand, Lucy’s was a huge, heavily jeweled collar. Jubilee didn’t care what kind of collar she had if only Carey would give her one. All she wanted was to be bound to him forever.   Jubilee loved Carey Williams with every cell of her body. Her only aim in life was to serve him. That didn’t mean she didn’t try to beat him in their long-running trivia battle. But if he collared her and told her never to answer a trivia question again she’d be content. If only she could love and serve him formally.

  For almost a year now she’d been his sub. The scenes they enacted in the dungeon, or before the entire community in the barn, were the happiest moments in her week. On the rare occasions when he whipped her so perfectly she transcended into subspace, the euphoria lasted for hours and hours. Only in subspace was she truly free.   Jubilee had tried so hard to be the ideal sub. Pleasing Carey made her happy.   Blinking away the tears from her eyes, trying hard to be happy for Ramona, Jubilee looked around the barn where she, Ramona, and Gaynor were standing talking to each other. Well, barn wasn’t really quite the right word for the building. It appeared to be an ordinary barn on the outside, but inside it was just a big room with pale cream walls, heavy gold drapes covering long windows, some huge, floor-length mirrors on one wall, and a smallish stage in the center of the room. It was Carnal Connections’s meeting place and community center.

  Jubilee’s gaze drifted to Ramona’s collar again. “You collar is so pretty,” she said softly.

  Ramona gave her a hug. “I hope you get what you want real soon,” Ramona whispered.

  Jubilee blinked tears from her eyes again. Am I so obvious? Does everyone know how I feel? Or is it just that Ramona is so very perceptive?

  Jubilee was very surprised when she saw Larry Jones waiting in the small dungeon Carey always chose when he didn’t want to enact a scene in the main dungeon. Carey’d sent her a text message to come, but hadn’t told her anything more than that. He never did. Jubilee never minded displaying her body in public in a BDSM scene. It was actually quite weird. She’d never go topless on the beach, even though dozens of women did, yet being topless in a public BDSM scene, with Carey as her Dom, never made her feel embarrassed or self-conscious.   Jubilee glanced at Carey quickly. She’d been so busy thinking about Larry that she’d scarcely noticed her Dom standing in the middle of the room.   She kept her gaze lowered to the large stone blocks that covered the floor here and kneeled, hands clasped behind her back.

  Carey’s hands grabbed her dark-blonde hair and pulled her head back so she was looking into his face. “Understand that what happens in the dungeon tonight will never be spoken of outside this room.”

  “Yes, Master.”

  Jubilee was confused. Whatever could happen here? They’d used this dungeon dozens of times before. Oh. Did he mean Larry being here? Was Larry going to Dominate her, too?

  Bolted to the stone floor were several manacles designed to clasp around a sub’s ankles. From the ceiling directly above the manacles hung chains, so the sub’s arms could be tied or handcuffed to
the chains as well. Carey gestured to Jubilee to go and stand by the manacles. Happily, she did so. He was about to beat her. Would he use the cane? A flogger? Or maybe he’d paddle or whip her. Jubilee didn’t mind. She was looking forward to demonstrating to him once again what a perfectly behaved sub she could be. No matter how aroused she became with the punishment, she wouldn’t orgasm unless he gave her permission.
