  Prologue

  Wanted:

  Twelve women aged over twenty-one, with excellent written and spoken English, prepared to move to the United States of America for a permanent position as bride to two or three men. As their wife, you will be loved and cherished, and provided with everything you need. But you will be expected to work hard, to integrate into a small, close-knit community, and to obey your husbands.

  Short-listed applicants will be interviewed by video-link and must provide photo ID and references.

  Chapter One

  “Get back in the car. You can’t open a beauty parlor here. It’s not a nice neighborhood.” Yaro Cooper urged Shakina Brown to return to the car.

  “Who says it’s not a nice neighborhood? This little shopping strip is perfect. The stores here are exactly right to bring clients into my salon. It’s perfect. Absolutely perfect. These are the kind of people who’ll want their hair and nails done.”

  Yaro grabbed her arms and tried to push her back into the car. Shakina dug all her weight onto her heels and resisted him. She liked Yaro and Zoan. Liked them a lot. In fact, she would very likely date them if they asked her out. But not until her own life was organized first. The CEO of Cooper’s Farm had agreed to act as guarantor so she could set up her own business and that was her first priority. She’d spent hours trying to find the right place to open her store and this was it.

  Zoan Cooper stood in front of her, right in her personal space, so close she could have kissed his nose. If she’d wanted to, that is. But right now she was feeling more inclined to slap the two men upside the head for trying to stop her from achieving her dream.

  “This is where those two men tried to capture Okapi. Right here in this parking lot,” said Zoan.

  “So what? They drugged him at the Sheraton Hotel. Are you trying to say the Sheraton Hotel isn’t in a nice neighborhood either?”

  “Don’t be obtuse, Shakina. This is where the men acted. They must have known they could safely attack him here without fear of reprisals. Get in the car, now,” ordered Yaro.

  “Oh, fuck off, you two. They attacked Okapi here because it was nighttime and dark. Not for any other reason. It’s now daytime and you’re making a spectacle of yourselves trying to boss me around. Here comes the realtor now. You two can fuck off back to the farm. I’ll catch a taxi home when I’m done here.” Shakina stepped away from them and marched over to the door of the vacant store.

  She’d wanted to be a beautician for as long as she could remember. Even as a tiny little girl she’d sit for hours braiding the neighborhood kids’ hair, and inventing various hairstyles. She’d even hoped to manage her own store one day, had picked out a name for it and everything, but there was way too much unemployment and crime in her own hometown. She’d thought of moving to California. All those movie stars and up-and-coming starlets had to get their hair done every day so there was sure to be plenty of work.

  Shakina had pondered for a very long time before replying to the advertisement for the mail-order brides. It pretty much meant being a w
ife instead of a businesswoman. But she would be accepted and appreciated. Her life would have purpose and hope. Finally she’d sent off the application and left the response in the hands of the gods. If she got the job, good. If she didn’t, she’d catch a bus toward California. When her money ran out she’d take any work she could get until she could finish her journey and once there, she should have no trouble finding a job.

  She looked down at the sidewalk and hid a grin. Yaro and Zoan were standing right behind her, not touching her. But she could feel their body heat and their annoyance at her actions. However, they hadn’t done what they easily could have, which was to pick her up and physically put her back in the car. She was five foot six and average build, but they were both solid, muscular, and over six foot. Manhandling her would have been dead easy for them. So that proved they did care about her. They’d tried to make her change her mind, but they’d stopped short of forcing her. Which meant they truly cared about her. Yeah, that was interesting.

  “Ms. Brown? I’m Gracie.”

  “Hi, Gracie. I’m Shakina.”

  The woman didn’t look a day over eighteen to Shakina. Maybe it was just that, at twenty-four herself, she was starting to get older. It was definitely time to get a move on and open her beauty parlor anyway. Gracie unlocked the door and pushed it wide open, then walked into the room. Shakina stood right in the very center of the store and looked around.

  The two hair-washing stations would go on the back wall. Two big, comfortable, hair-washing chairs with sinks attached for her customers to lie back in, while she shampooed and conditioned their hair and massaged their scalps. On the side wall she’d install a huge mirror so three or four customers could sit facing it at once while she cut and styled their hair and Tanisha worked beside her, learning the trade. At the very front of the store would be a couple of easy chairs for people waiting for their friends and maybe a big dollhouse or something for their children to play with to encourage young moms to come to the salon as well as older women.

  Shakina walked through the room and out into the back section. The other side of dividing wall into the store was shelves from floor to ceiling. That was far more storage than she required, but she would need to stock her lotions, conditioners, and dyes, towels and so on. Another door opened into a miniscule bathroom, and there was a small sink and just enough room to put a tiny table with a couple of chairs for them to take their breaks here if they wanted to.

  Gracie opened the back door, and pointed to the parking spaces there. “You have two reserved spaces by your door, but of course your clients can use as many spaces as they need out front.”

  “Have there been any burglaries around here?” asked Yaro.

  Shakina turned to him and frowned, but he wasn’t looking at her.

  “Coopersville has almost no crime. It’s one of the safest places to live and work in America. I haven’t heard of any robberies or anything really. There was a fender bender in the parking lot recently but that’s hardly a crime.”

  Yaro grunted.

  “I’m planning to open a beauty salon. I think I already said that. I’d need to renovate inside the store to add hair-washing stations and likely more electrical outlets for hair dryers and curling tongs and so on. Would that be allowed under the lease?”

  “Of course. Everyone renovates internally to suit their own business.”

  Shakina took a notepad out of her purse and drew a few diagrams to help her with her planning, then collected all the paperwork from Gracie. “I’ll need to talk some more with Mr. Cooper, but I should be able to get back to you inside forty-eight hours.”

  “Not a problem. If someone else makes me an offer, I’ll contact you.”

  Shakina stood on the sidewalk staring into the store, then walked up and down the row of stores, noting the constant passing of customers and people looking around. The tiny shopping area was a buzz of activity. Another good sign for her business. As she went to climb into the backseat of the farm car, Zoan stopped her. “You need to mate us now, Shakina. We have to be able to protect you before you start coming here to work. You’ll be all alone and you need us to look after you.”

  She stepped back from him, her anger rising. “One. I haven’t needed anyone to look after me since I was in kindergarten. Two. At no time have I said or even hinted that you two were the men I’d mate. And three. A woman does not like being told what to do. She likes to be asked. If you don’t want to antagonize any more of the mail-order brides, consider inviting them on a date before you tell them they have to mate you.”

  Shakina ran onto the road and waved her arm. A bus was just about to pull out of the parking lot. Fortunately the driver opened the door for her and she climbed on, buying a ticket and sitting down. She did not look out the window to see what the men did. She was much too annoyed with them and their takeover attitude. They’d never so much as invited her to a movie for fuck’s sake!

  “Way to go, bro. You fucked that up royally.” Yaro spoke tough but inside his heart was aching with pain because they’d upset Shakina. She’d been so happy and excited about this stupid store and he and Zoan had destroyed all her pleasure—as well as their chances of mating her in the near future.

  “Me? I’m not the one who tried to scare the shit out of her, and then push her into the car. I’m also not your brother.” Zoan climbed into the car and slammed the door so hard the vehicle rocked on its tires.

  “Temper, temper. I’m the one with red hair. You’re supposed to be cool, calm, and collected.”

  “If you don’t want your nose to collect my fist, you’d better shut your mouth.”

  Yaro slid into his seat and closed the door quietly. He buckled his seatbelt straight away though, in case Zoan decided to drive off fast. Yaro wasn’t sure whether Zoan was angrier with Shakina for rejecting them, or with himself for his inept attempt to protect her. Fortunately his bad temper seldom lasted long and he was usually smart enough to think about what he’d done wrong and not make the same mistake twice. Their mistake this time had been not dating Shakina weeks ago.

  He and Zoan had known for a couple of weeks now that she was the woman they wanted. Nine mail-order brides had been brought onto Cooper’s Farm for the twelve pairs of eligible bachelors. Several of the women had appealed to him, although his first choice had always been Shakina. But the rule was that the woman had the right to choose which pair of men she wanted, and neither he nor Zoan had been ready to make the first move with her. But several other pairs of bachelors had been dating their women already. In fact, three of them were already mated, so they knew that time was running out and they needed to show Shakina they liked her. Escorting her on this chore had seemed like the perfect way to look after her, and demonstrate they wanted her, simultaneously. Yeah, well that had been a huge cock-up. Now she hated them.

  Zoan was driving very slowly, staying behind the bus. So, they were going to escort her all the way home after all. Yaro shut his eyes and pictured Shakina. She was only a little thing, maybe five six to his six two, but she had round breasts and a lush ass, and he couldn’t wait to get his hands on both those assets. Her hair was red-brown as was his, but hers was redder. Her skin was paler than his as well, although since he worked indoors on computers and IT, his skin was a lot paler than Zoan’s. Zoan worked outdoors on the farm most of the time. That meant Zoan was strongly muscled from all that exercise as well.

  But Shakina was strong, too. She had the strength to be active all day long. As a beautician she would be on her feet most of the day, and work quite long hours as well, so yes, she’d be plenty fit. That would be useful when they took her to bed. With two of them to fuck, she’d need some stamina. If they ever got to take her to bed after this fiasco of a morning.

  “We’ll offer to renovate the store for her. Physically do the work, with the help from some of the other wolves,” said Zoan.

  “Huh? None of us knows anything about shop fitting. I’d be happy enough to paint the
inside for her though,” argued Yaro.

  “If we aren’t there she’ll hire some company to do it, and the people could be anyone. Even criminals like the people who kidnapped Okapi.”

  “I didn’t think of that.” Yaro didn’t know anything about shop work but he supposed he could learn. He certainly didn’t like the idea of Shakina alone with a passel of tradesmen who might not be honorable.

  “Those hair-washing chair things she mentioned will be special ordered from a beauty salon supplier, I guess, but the actual inside of the shop, installing counters and mirrors and whatever, that’s just carpentry and any of us can do that,” said Zoan.

  “Well, maybe you can. I can install her computer, and her register, I suppose. And paint. I already said I could paint.” Living on a working farm, they’d all grown up knowing how to do simple chores and use tools. Fine joinery was beyond him, but Yaro agreed most things they could do. All the werewolves had to work on the farm. He knew more about cabbages and onions than anyone would ever want to hear him talk about.

  “I’ll tell Cooper I want to be the one to keep watch over her, so I’ll be there to help her. I expect Tedros will be allowed to assist me. There aren’t many jobs he can’t do. And as much as possible we’ll have you there as well, even if it’s just to bring us all lunch or something, so she’ll constantly be reminded that she belongs to us.”

  “Yeah, about that. Zoan, you need to tone that down. I don’t think she’s ready to hear that yet.”
