  “Shut up, Rhett. I want to listen to this.”

  Amber Smalt shrugged Rhett’s hot, heavy hand off her shoulder and inched away from his body on the hard wooden chair. As silently as she could, she moved her chair another inch away from his so it was jammed against the chair on her other side. Rhett was becoming really annoying with his endless efforts to monopolize her every waking minute. She was pretty sure he’d like to monopolize her sleeping time as well, but there was no way she was giving him that opportunity. It was hard enough to shake him off during the daytime. The man didn’t seem to have grasped the concept of no yet.

  As usual, he completely ignored her, wrapping his arm back over her shoulder and puffing hot air into her ear as he spoke.

  “You don’t want to hear these boring people go on and on about their tiny little pack in the desert. Come outside with me, and we’ll find something much better to do.”

  She didn’t look at him, but she could hear the leer in his voice and knew there’d be an ugly smirk across his handsome face. This time she picked up his arm with her free hand and dropped it onto his lap like the piece of trash she was coming to realize he was, despite being a stunningly good-looking man.

  “So we were hoping a few of you would consider visiting with us for two or three months to help up set up the project and advise us on what kinds of seeds would grow best in the desert,” the speaker named James said.

  “Just a visit for a few months, or to live with you permanently?” queried an older man named Arthur.

  “Obviously we’d love it if someone wanted to join us and lead the project. But realistically, two or three months is all we can ask out of a busy person’s life,” replied James.

  “Ah, but you see, I’m no longer a busy person. Every winter my arthritis gives me hell, so I’m what you might call semi-retired now by necessity.”

  James looked at Arthur, and Amber watched a grin split his face and his big brown eyes gleam with happiness. “Maybe your arthritis wouldn’t bother you as much in the desert where it’s hot and dry for most of the year. Then you could unretire if you wanted to.”

  Amber giggled. She was pretty sure unretire wasn’t a word, but she loved the sassy way James was responding to Arthur. Besides, what he said was true. Hot, dry weather might suit the older man’s joints better and ease his aches and pains.

  Now if only Rhett had as considerate and caring a nature as James appeared to have, maybe she could like him better. As it was, she was struggling to think of any redeeming features about Rhett apart from his pretty face and hard-muscled body. She stared some more at James. He was every bit as good-looking as Rhett and seemed to be a whole lot nicer person as well. Maybe she should think about moving out to the desert for a few months. By then Rhett would have decided to chase some other woman, and when she returned, she wouldn’t have to worry about avoiding his grasping hands anymore.

  Hmm. The more she thought about it, the better she liked that idea. She knew plenty about the American First Seeds Project. She’d worked in the office here on the project ever since it began and was on top of the
business side of the system. Actually, with Arthur to advise on the plants themselves and their physical care, and her to help whoever was going to do the paperwork side of things, they’d have the project well covered.

  In a flash, her decision was made. Amber jumped to her feet. “I’ll come, too, and help you with all the paperwork. I’ve been dealing with it for years and can train your people in what to do.”

  “What the fuck? You can’t do that. Sit down, Amber, you belong here with me.” Rhett grabbed her arm and pulled her down into his lap.

  “If you don’t want to be singing soprano for a week, you’d better let me go.” She made a fist of her right hand and left it inches away from his family jewels as she slid forward off his lap.

  “But you can’t. You’re mine.”

  She shook her head. “I belong to no one but myself.”

  “Rhett.” The Alpha’s voice was a stern warning, and Rhett instantly dropped her arm.

  “Arthur, Amber, James, Reuben, come with me and we’ll get a few things organized now.”

  Happily Amber followed the others out of the meeting room and down the hallway to the Alpha’s office. She was going to the desert for two months. How awesome was that!

  * * * *

  James Sullivan was amazed at his good fortune. Two people had volunteered to come out to the Roxburgh pack and help them establish a small garden as part of the American First Seeds Project. He’d been impressed by the amount of effort this pack had put into maintaining the purity of their stock. Every person and vehicle that came into the property here was thoroughly cleansed to avoid contaminating the plants.

  He’d made pages and pages of notes about techniques they used. But he thought at least, for the start, his own pack’s best protection would be the fact that they were in the middle of nowhere. There were no farms within a hundred miles of them and, therefore, no seeds likely to blow over their stock or be brought in on the soles of anyone’s boots. He planned, though, to talk to his pack about maybe establishing some form of windbreak as an added protection from seeds from the native desert plants.

  But right now he was excited to hear what the Alpha and this man Arthur had to say. And then there was the woman, Amber. She was stunning, with a lush, ripe figure, short, red-brown hair, and hazel eyes. Or maybe they were green. He’d be able to have a closer look when they were in the Alpha’s office.

  Because of the need to decontaminate everyone’s clothing and footwear all the time, the pack had only the one large building, four stories tall. Everyone had bedrooms in it. All the offices were here, as well as the communal living and dining areas and some recreation areas. Having everyone in the one place made pollen control much easier.

  But getting back to the woman, having someone who knew how to deal with all the paperwork would be an immense help. Maybe Indigo or Summer would be willing to learn how to do it as well. Already, their leader, Chris, was busy with paperwork when he preferred to be outdoors, so if the women could do it and free Chris and himself so they could do more of the physical work, that would be great.

  Or maybe this Amber would stay with them. Nah, probably not. That Rhett guy seemed pretty keen to have her back as soon as possible. If he even let her leave. James sighed. Likely she would change her mind and not come after all.

  The Alpha waved them all to sit down and then said, “Reuben, James, I’m sure you already understand the most important thing you must do, above everything else, is ensure the purity of the genetic line of the seeds. That’s the whole point of the project. The seeds you’ll be given have been tested extensively to prove they’re the original ones with no mutations, and it’ll be up to you to ensure that nothing interferes with your crops.”

  James nodded. Yes, he’d definitely gotten that memo. “Yes sir. We’ll be setting up a drip watering system so there’ll be no danger of contaminants from rain or storms getting to our stock, and we’ll figure out how to protect them from wind-born pollen as well.”

  “My best friend’s mother grew fruit trees indoors until they were sturdy enough to be planted outside, and likely we’ll keep all our plants inside in pots under similar conditions for a while,” added Reuben.

  James nodded. He’d heard the stories about Mrs. Wishram’s fruit trees, and he hoped to one day meet the woman who’d reared five sons while running a store and growing a garden.

  He concentrated as the Alpha repeated information he’d already told them, reinforcing points James knew he’d already written down and needed to memorize as soon as he could. Maybe even on the flight back to Nevada.

  “Arthur, are you confident you’ll be able to cope in the desert? Your knees won’t permit you to kneel on the ground and tend infant plants anymore you know,” said the Alpha.

  “I’ve accepted my limitations and have all sorts of coping techniques already. If the seeds will be kept in pots for a while that’ll suit me fine since I can sit at a table to work on them. Otherwise, in these days of cell phone cameras, getting the information I need no longer means relying on word-of-mouth descriptions. Besides, I hope the hot, dry air will help me get around better than here. It’s the winters that are tough. Summer isn’t so bad.”

  The Alpha nodded. “So you think you might stay there?”

  “Yes, sir, I do. Especially if my health improves. Here, retirement is staring me in the face. Out in the desert, maybe I’ll be able to keep working for another five or ten years. I’d like that.”

  James spoke slowly, the thoughts clarifying in his mind as he verbalized them. “I’ve been thinking we ought to get something like a golf buggy, an electric cart with bigger tires so it will cope on soft soil. Right now we either walk or drive our trucks wherever we want to go. It’d be good to have something that fit in between those two options, and if we did, it’d mean you wouldn’t need to walk much.”

  Reuben shook his head. “A golf buggy might not work, and an electric scooter definitely wouldn’t cope with the terrain.”

  Arthur looked startled. “No, but a quad bike would. Dammit, why didn’t I think of that? I’ve always wanted to drive one of those things. I’ll put in an order for one today and get it shipped to your Alpha’s office. Where’s that again?”

  James didn’t answer because Wolfric wasn’t his Alpha. Wolfric was the Alpha of the Nevada Desert Pack, of which Reuben was a member, but his people hadn’t transferred their allegiance from their old pack in Idaho to the desert yet. Likely they should talk about doing it soon, though. No way was he ever going back to Idaho, and he was certain the other men felt the same as he did.

  Reuben jumped in and gave Arthur the details of the Alpha’s home on the outskirts of Towler. “Just give me ten minutes to check with him that it’s okay to have it delivered there.”

  James hoped they’d have enough money to cover the cost of a quad bike. Arthur shouldn’t have to pay for something that would be an asset useful to the entire community. Also, if it was needed to help their seeds expert get around, they had to get it. But they were trying to conserve their money and stretch it as far as possible until they had an income stream organized.

  They planned to build a small store and gas station at the Roxburgh Junction, and even though they would do much of the labor themselves, it’d still be a couple of years before it started making a profit. Meanwhile, they all hoped to find mates, and that, in turn, meant more expense, as they had to finish refurbishing the houses in their community.

  Mates. He looked at Amber again. She was exactly the type of woman he liked, and he knew Bryan would appreciate her too. But would she even come with them, or would Rhett make her stay here? And if she came, how would she cope with the heat of the desert? They’d arrived from Idaho in winter and had six months to get used to the summer. She’d be arriving straight from Ohio, where an eighty- degree day was considered scorching, into Nevada, where one hundred degrees was considered ordinary.

  Ah, likely she wouldn’t come anyway. It was too much to hope that both she and Arthur would jo
in them.

  * * * *

  “I’m going to ship several crates of possessions and horticultural equipment to Wolfric’s home in Towler, as well as having the quad bike delivered there. If you want to pack up an extra suitcase of clothing or your favorite things, you’re welcome to add them to my crates,” Arthur said.

  “That’s very generous of you, thank you. I’m happy to pay my share of the costs. Shipping’s expensive.” Amber hadn’t even thought about what she’d take with her, although if she was going for two months, she’d need more than just half a dozen sets of underwear and a pair of clean jeans.

  “It’s actually cheaper to ship a couple of big crates than to send regular parcels. Pack whatever you want, and I’ll send it off with my things.”

  Amber ran up the stairs to her room and pulled her suitcase from the closet. They weren’t leaving for another day yet. Reuben and James wanted to be sure they’d seen and learned everything here that they could. But since she was going to the desert, she ought to pack sensibly.

  She rolled her underwear, T-shirts, and shorts into tight cylinders and packed them and then stared at her jeans and sweaters. “Does it get cold at night? And how cold?”

  Amber opened the top drawer of her desk and took out her iPad, swiping it awake and looking up the weather in Towler for the next couple of months. “Wow. When they said one hundred degrees, they weren’t joking.”

  She tucked the iPad into her purse and rummaged through her closet until she found a soft, wide-brimmed hat and a baseball cap and packed both of them. She added a few sweaters, three pairs of jeans, toiletries, summer pajamas, three pairs of sandals, and her flip-flops. She set out her favorite shorts and a halter-top to wear on the airplane, with her heavy work boots and a waterproof coat. She wouldn’t win any fashion awards in that clothing, but her boots were damn heavy, and it’d be insane to pack them instead of wearing them.
